Facilitating Reconciliation

RECONCILIATION IS NOT ABOUT DENYING THE PAST, IT’S ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING IT… TOGETHER.

OUR HISTORY

The Article 116 Exclusions Group was formed by Felix and Isabelle Couchman in 2018 to challenge the then-existing unfair and unjust exclusions of a number of those applying to restore their German citizenship after either they or their ancestors had been deprived of it on political, racial, or religious grounds.

The approach of the group was one of campaigning, lobbying, and advocacy and the work was successful.

In June 2021 the Fourth Amendment to the Citizenship Act was passed correcting the exclusions that had been central to the campaign thereby enabling many who were previously excluded to become citizens. The Article 116 Reconciliation Project has evolved from the success of this campaign; its focus is now on reconciliation, reconnection and the provision of information.

Our aim.

Guidance

The provision of information and guidance for those applying for German or Austrian citizenship.

Reconciliation

Facilitating reconnection and reconciliation with Germany, particularly for those who have recently received or are about to receive their citizenship.

Education

Creating and promoting educational projects linked to themes of citizenship and reconciliation.

Communication

Promoting books, publications, documentaries etc. linked to the work and aims of the project.

Facilitating Connection

Our mission.

The Article 116 Reconciliation Project seeks to provide information and guidance and to facilitate reconnection and reconciliation, particularly to those whose families were formerly deprived of German citizenship.

Our approach and ethos has always been to build bridges; we seek to communicate constructively, with integrity and with respect to all
